WHAT IS DISKNET
Disknet is pro-active virus defense that prevents virus infection. Disknet
is not a scanner. The DiskNet function is to eliminate the inherent problems
of using scanning technology alone as an anti-virus defense. For more
information on the concerns associated with scanning alone, please ask for
the Reflex white paper "A False Sense of Security" with Anti-Virus solutions.
Disknet is a brilliant new approach to anti-virus software, and an effective
tool to enforce your company's security procedures. Every PC that has Disknet
loaded is protected against: 1) unauthorized and potentially infected floppy
disks, 2) boot sector and partition sector viruses, 3) unauthorized software
use, and 4) unauthorized access to a PC's hard disk. Disknet provides security
against virus infection, transmission, and unauthorized software
installation, all without any reduced PC performance.
THE DISKNET CONCEPT
After utilizing a scanner to ensure floppy diskettes are virus free, Disknet
places a special "signature" on each disk. As long as the floppy diskettes
are used within the Disknet shield, Disknet is invisible to the user.
However, if a floppy diskette leaves the shield and is written to,
Disknet will force the user to re-scan the floppy to ensure it is still virus
free. Typically, scanning is done by a one centrally located administrator
PC within each user group. In addition to preventing virus infection, all
incoming software can now be monitored via the administrator PC.
ABOUT THIS DEMO
This Disknet demo is not a complete working copy. Certain security features
of Disknet have been disabled. In addition, Program Security Guard (PSG), an
important part of the Disknet anti-virus defense which detects and prevents
virus like behavior, is not included in the demo.
This demo is time-disabled. It will continue to work four (4) weeks after the
date you install it.
This demo contains an Automatic Install -- you cannot opt to customize
the install process. The Customize Install menu is available for
viewing in this demo program so that you can see what options are available.
This demo is the "Administrator" version of Disknet, every PC onto which you
install this demo will require scanner software. This is not true for the
complete version of Disknet. The scanning technology included with DiskNet is
ThunderByte (file name TBSCAN.EXE).
If you would like to evaluate the complete working copy of this software,
please contact James C. Shaeffer & Associates, Inc. at 1-800-968-9JCS, or
Reflex at 1-800-6REFLEX.
INSTALLING DISKNET
Once Disknet is installed, you will not have access to any diskettes that
have not been authorized! There are seven important steps to installing
Disknet. It is imperative that you perform each step, in order:
1) After you have created and labeled your DiskNet Demo diskette and
copied the DiskNet Demo files onto the diskette, you must
boot your PC from a CLEAN WRITE PROTECTED DOS DISKETTE!
2) Once the PC has been booted from the floppy, insert the DiskNet Demo
Diskette.
3) Scan the hard drive using the ThunderByte scanner by typing:
TBSCAN C:
4) If the PC is virus free, make a DISKNET directory on the C: drive
and copy all the files from the DiskNet Demo diskette to the DISKNET
directory on the C: drive.
5) Install the DiskNet software from the diskette using the INSTALL
command. Use the Automatic Installation option.
6) Reboot the PC to load the DiskNet program
7) When you try and access a diskette that has not been authorized by
DiskNet, you will get the following message:
"UNAUTHORIZED DISK, Please have this disk checked"
When this occurs, respond to the DOS error with an F, change to the
DISKNET directory on your hard drive and execute the command
"CHECKTB". This will scan the diskette for viruses and authorize the
diskette for use within the disknet shield if the diskette is free of
viruses.
Alternatively, if the diskette contains no executable code, the CHECKDAT
program may be used to authorize the diskette for use. CHECKDAT checks
the diskette to make sure it has no executable code on it, overwrites
the boot sector to eliminate boot sector infecting viruses, and writes
the DiskNet signature.
USING DISKNET IN THE WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT
Configuring your scanner:
In order to use Disknet in the Windows environment, you must first configure
your scanner:
1. Click on the Reflex Disknet Icon, and select "Configure" from the pop-up
menu.
2. Select the "Execute" box . The program path will default to the CHECK.DAT
program. This path needs to be changed.
3. Enter the full path of the check program that is located in your scanner
directory. You will find a list of supported scanners and the Disknet drivers
name for the scanner towards the end of this manual, "Disknet CHECK Drivers".
For example, if your are using the ThunderByte scanner, enter:
C:\DISKNET\CHECKTB.EXE
Authorizing a floppy diskette:
1. Execute your scanner program. (You can do this by using File Manager)
2. Disknet will then display the following options:
A: test drive A:
B: test drive B:
X: exit checker
To signature a Diskette for use, insert the disk into the appropriate drive
and select the corresponding key. Disknet will automatically execute the
check program designated in your configuration program path. If the diskette is virus free, Disknet will place a signature
virus free, Disknet will place a signature on the diskette, authorizing the disk
to be used in your environment.
Unauthorized Diskettes:
When an unauthorized floppy disk is accessed, Disknet will display:
UNAUTHORIZED DISK in drive A: Scan and authorize disk now?
When you select "yes," Disknet will automatically execute the check program
designated in your configuration program path. If the diskette is virus
free, Disknet will place a signature on the diskette, authorizing the disk to
be used in your environment.
USING DISKNET IN THE DOS ENVIRONMENT
Authorizing a diskette:
To authorize a diskette in the DOS environment, at the DOS Prompt:
1. Change to the directory where your scanner resides (C:\DISKNET)
2. Enter the name of the Disknet CHECK driver associated with your scanner.
Disknet provides a driver which automatically executes the scanner or
scanners you are using. You will find a list of supported scanners and the
Disknet driver name for that scanner towards the end of this manual,
"DiskNet CHECK Drivers". For example, if you are using the Thunderbyte scanner,
type:
CHECKTB.EXE
3. Insert the diskette you wish to scan into the appropriate drive.
Disknet will then access your scanner and scan the floppy.
If no viruses are found, the Disknet signature will be added
to the diskette.
Unauthorized Diskettes:
When an unauthorized diskette is accessed, DOS will display:
Data error reading drive A
Abort, Retry, Fail?
DO NOT be concerned when you see this - Disknet is now working!
To authorize the diskette:
1. Press "F" for fail, DOS will display:
Current drive is no longer valid>
2. Type c: to make the C: drive the current drive.
3. Follow the steps to authorizing a diskette in the DOS environment
outlined above.
Disknet CHECK Drivers
A list of supported scanners and the Disknet driver name for that scanner
follow:

REMOVING DISKNET:
To delete Disknet from a PC:
1. Insert your Disknet diskette into the drive and type DISKNET
2. You will be asked to type your Supervisor password. For demo purposes, it
has been created as "DISKNET".
3. At the Supervisor Services menu, type 1 to de-install.
4. You must now power your computer off and back on to completely remove the
Disknet TSR from your system.
DISKNET FEATURES AND BENEFITS:
We did not include all features of Disknet in this demo version. A brief
product overview appears below, however we encourage you to contact us
directly for more information.
Disknet provides complete virus protection against all forms of infection by
enforcing several anti-virus procedures. This includes scanning diskettes and
signaturing them when they are verified virus free, utilizing a behavior blocker
which detects and prevents virus-like behavior, and implementing utility
software to prevent user by-pass. Disknet is invisible to the user and does
not reduce PC performance.
The Disknet Signature
Approximately 90% of all viruses are transferred via floppy disks. Disknet
provides total protection from diskette virus infection through the Disknet
authorization process. The Disknet signature is written to a section of the
diskette reserved for OEM use, therefore, even if the disk is "full" there
will still be room for Disknet. The Disknet signature can be customized for
your organization, or work groups within the organization.
A disk with the Disknet signature can be accessed normally on unprotected
computers, however if the disk is written to, it will need to be re-scanned
before entry is allowed back into your Disknet protected environment. You
may also establish your system so that only the addition of executable files
will require re-scanning.
Program Security Guard (PSG)
PSG is a secondary layer of defense. It provides protection for all .EXE
and .COM files on the hard drive by preventing unauthorized modification by
viruses or users. PSG will stop any virus from spreading that may be missed
by the scanner. In addition, PSG will stop a virus that may enter the
system through non disk use (i.e. modem) by detecting and preventing
virus-like activity.
User by-pass protection
Disknet features include utilities which will not allow users to remove
Disknet or by-pass the Disknet security features. The utility package
prevents access to the hard drive after booting from a floppy disk, prevents
boot sector viruses from infecting the hard drive, prevents a user from removing
Disknet, and provides protection from unauthorized access by requiring a
password on power-up.
